“It is argued the government policy, especially in terms of mental health prevention and treatment, is ideologically driven.  That is, it places blame for psychological disorder within the individual – often attributing it to either (unverified) biological correlates or personal weakness within the capitalist economic structure – removing culpability from government, who have a moral responsibility to protect their citizens from harm.  It may be more useful to evaluate exactly what governments can do to address social inequality and contribute to the reduction of mental disorder in society.  Naturally, it would be wrong to adopt a purely social materialist approach, but it seems that blaming sufferers of mental disorders for their problems, as opposed to looking at wider macro-level issues, is unlikely to increase the mood of the nation.” – Craig A.
